The Fat Man

 ITALIAN

ZUCCATO
O2 Centre, 255 Finchley Road, Swiss Cottage, London NW3
Tel: 0171 431 1799
Fat Man rating: 80/100

Apparently, the Finchley Road is one of the longest in London; who cares? At the London end, they've just built one of these leisure malls which houses supermarkets, a health club, a multiplex cinema and some restaurants; you know, the crappy sort that sell cardboard for burgers but there's no where else to go so you have to suffer. My wife dragged me off to see the latest Mel Gibson effort and to force me into one of these offensive eateries. We prowled around - there was a Yo! Sushi there but she didn't fancy (bloody typical) so we found, next door, an Italian job that looked rather trendy, Zuccato.

We were shown to our table - the restaurant is sort of hidden round the back - and I was very enthused by the décor. Dead modern, loads of black, smart tables, comfy chairs, interesting art on the walls and some great music playing. The staff were honestly faultless and wouldn't have been out of place in a three star jobbie. Attentive, friendly, proficient and smartly attired. The menu was very interesting, modern Italian offering everything from pasta and pizza to shellfish and meats.

Our whole meal was really superb; my wife had bruschetta with king prawns whilst I had linguine with mussels. For main courses, she had a very imaginative cannelloni whilst I enjoyed a very good pizza with bresoala and a goats cheese dressing; desserts were equally good (one chocolate parfait and one apple crostini); include one very serviceable New Zealand Sauvignon Blanc, a bottle of water and a cappuccino and the total bill came to £51- which makes it probably the best value in town. Truly great meal and the film wasn't bad either! Wish I looked like him, lucky sod!

Kids welcome.
