YO! SUSHI
Poland Street, Soho, London W1/Harvey Nicholls
Tel: 0181 743 5370
Fat Man rating: 72/100

There used to be a game show in Britain called The Generation Game (probably based on one of yours) where all the prizes used to go past on a conveyor belt; whichever ones the contestant remembered were theirs. Always truly worthless specimens of bad taste but the studio audience went wild regardless; probably a forerunner to Prozac was liberally administered in the welcome beverage! Soooo this brings me to 1999 and sushi flying past me on little plates but, here's the good bit, it goes round and round and round (providing some thieving git doesn't get there first whilst you make up your mind. Sort of fishing for your dinner with chopsticks but a great conversation piece; "Ooh, was that an Ebi (prawn) I saw or a dishevelled Sake (salmon)? Oh look, here comes some California roll followed closely by some Tuna roll - I wonder if the Germans sitting at the next table will get there first - like they do with the sun loungers or the buffet trolley in Majorca!" You see, not only is this one of the healthiest types of cuisine but, at Yo! Sushi, articulation returns to the dining table!

Now, use your imagination. In the middle of the conveyor belt are the chefs, who prepare all of the sushi fresh on site. They then place the items onto different colour plates which depict the cost of each dish, ie: green is £2.50 or pink is £4, etc. The waiter then counts your plates at the end of the meal and voila - addition! No - there's nowhere to hide your empties, either! Your drinks are brought round on a little robot - I kid you not - and you grab them as it passes. There are other dishes apart from sushi; yakitori, tonkatsu etc but the sushi is the star and it is fresh, well-prepared and sumptuous.

Overall, depending on how hungry you are, it will cost you between £10 and £20 per head with another £5 each for drinks (max).

Kids essential.
