The Fat Man

 ITALIAN

SCALINI
1 Walton Street, London SW3
Tel: 0171 225 2301
Fat Man rating: 90/100

Not, perhaps, a restaurant that you would expect to see so highly placed. Scalini is traditional Italian in style, the décor is dour with the walls covered in photographs of celebrities; my last meal was under the watchful gaze of one Sylvester Stallone which is not exactly relaxing. The tables are so closed together that it is a pre-requisite for all waiters to weigh less than 100lbs!

The food is, however, absolutely wonderful. No poncy presentations, just great chow! In fact, my veal chop with truffles and cheese was about as inspiring as I can remember! The pastas are all cooked to perfection (don't waste your money on the spaghetti with Lobster) and the antipasto was quite endearing. Desserts are satisfying and the wine list well-priced and very Italian; try the Amarone if you like powerful, full-bodied reds. Service is a little harried but friendly and adequate.

The meal should be no more than £30 per person and the wine starts from £12. Bit popular so book in advance.

Kids welcome.
