The Fat Man

 BRITISH

RULES
35 Maiden Lane, Covent Garden, London WC2
Tel: 0171 836 5314
Fat Man rating: 71/100

English? What, English? Yup Ð and not a joke, either. Rules is one of England's oldest restaurants, dating back to the 1700s, but it would be nice if we didn't have to suffer the original décor any longer. The positioning of the tables ensures that even super models can't get out to go to the loo - watch them squirm - and the chairs are seriously hard work on the posterior but this quaint establishment has the finest choice of game available anywhere.

Eat grouse, pheasant, woodcock, partridge, quail, duck, venison or boar (depending on season), all cooked traditionally and wash it down with a fine offering from Bordeaux (known as claret).

The prices are reasonable considering the heritage and the house claret represents a superb value; the staff are efficient and at least you get to discover what aged really means! With wine, dinner for two would be upwards of £80.

Kids welcome.
