This most welcome fast-food chain, Nandos, is the brainchild of some South African bloke who also has a scrumptious range of sauces that one can buy to pep up their meals. Peri Peri is the order of the day; this is a combination of herbs and spices, perfected by the Portuguese, that ranges from a pleasant tingling sensation at the tip of the tongue (see Monica Lewinsky for alternative sources) to an outright, rip-roaring explosion of your senses that causes eyes to water and noses to run. The décor remains consistent throughout the chain Ð dark wood, tiled floors, err that's it, actually; stroll nonchalantly up to the counter and order _, _ or a whole chicken, straight off the chargrill and basted with mild peri peri, hot peri peri or mind-numbing peri peri; there is also lemon and herb for the weak or the young. Chips come plain or peri peri (cor, what a surprise) and the soft drinks are refillable (except at Earls Court, for some reason). Your food is ready in 3 or 4 minutes and you either get plates or eat off the tray, depending on the branch. The chicken is wonderful; never dry, perfectly cooked and very enticing. The peri peri chips are yummy but a bit potent so be careful! There are also one or two alternatives but that's not why you go to Nandos.
Damn fine value too, the meal costs £4 to £10 per person.
