L'Aventure is situated on a quiet side street off of Abbey Road. This delightful restaurant offers truly classic French cuisine in a very authentic setting. Permanently grossly understaffed, the owner Catherine and her entourage somehow manage to keep every table vaguely content although on busy nights it can be a bit of a drag. The menu is a Table D'Hôte with a choice of 5 or 6 starters and main courses and 4 or 5 desserts. Everything is very well done and you could honestly believe that you are sitting in someone's house in a tiny village in Burgundy. Their Côte de Veau (giant veal chop) is truly magnificent, as is their Oeufs à la Neige (floating islands) dessert. The wine list is short and well priced - try their Côte de Brouilly.
However, the down side is their preposterous accents. They may be real but after a while you wonder why Churchill ever bothered to help them out when old Adolf wanted to kick their butts. . . anyway, the tables are slightly cramped and probably cost $3 from a local hardware store and it is impossible to book a table outside on their sterrace when the weather is nice (2 days in July, 3 in August) as the whole of North London descends like eagles with a mouse in their sights - oh God, pass the pills, I'm losing it big time now. Next it'll be poetry. "There was an old man from Sheen, Who invented a wanking machine, On the 99th stroke, the son of a bitch broke, and whipped his bollocks to cream!" Warned you!
The menu is £27 for 3 courses and the wine starts at £11.
