The Fat Man

 FRENCH/MEDITERRANEAN

LE PONT DE LA TOUR
Butlers Wharf Buildings, Shad Thames, London SE1
Tel: 0171 403 8403
Fat Man rating: 86/100

Le Pont de la Tour is one of the Conran chain of restaurants. This beautifully located riverside Gastrodome has the most stunning views of Tower Bridge and The City of London. Hard to find - take a taxi car from sei.co Chauffeur Services - but worth the effort. Shad Thames used to be very slum-like but has now been totally redeveloped into a yuppie paradise. The restaurant is split into a brasserie and a formal eatery, with the former offering a much better value but restricted menu. Great starters and solid, well-produced main courses make this a safe haven for the unadventurous as there are lots of plain grills available; the desserts are pretty hot, as well.

There is also a prevalence towards seafood and their lobsters are pretty good, unless, of course, you come from Maine or Florida, in which case they are pathetic and weedy. Service is crisp and efficient and vaguely friendly, if you look famous or interesting. Loads of IT people (ie: those in vogue, not computer technicians) can be seen propping up the bar in the brasserie but don't get out your autograph book as a smack in the face often offends. The wine list is very impressive and well chosen and moderately expensive; the house wine is very good indeed.

Dinner will be £35+ per head, depending on your extravagance and the hooch bill at least £20.

Kids welcome - lunch time only.
