The Fat Man

 INTERNATIONAL

THE IVY
1 West Street, London W1
Tel: 0171 836 4751
Fat Man rating: 70/100

Is there a more consistent performer than this bastion of pre-theatre dinners, The Ivy? Sistered with Le Caprice (next to The Ritz in Arlington Street), this charming restaurant boasts fine wood-panelling, stained glass windows and some fine paintings which creates a lovely old-world ambience. It is also the definitive restaurant to sit next to someone famous. It's like an elegant Hollywood eatery but without the sunshine!

The menu enjoys a French/English theme with some far-Eastern influences. Seasoned performers are the seared scallops with bacon and spinach, Mediterranean fish soup, calf's liver and bacon and to finish try the sticky toffee-banana pudding or their bread and butter pudding. The wine list is very balanced and incredibly good value. The staff are mildly eccentric but very polished but then spending lunch with the likes of De Niro, Connery or Pacino probably renders them immune.

A 3 course meal should be no more than £40 per person and the wine from £15 upwards.

Kids not ideal but acceptable.
