Situated on a steep hill in the heart of Hampstead Village, The Gaucho Grill is a stylish Argentinian brasserie, tastefully and originally decorated with chairs in mock (I hope.) Zebra and tiger skin patterns. A very modern bar fills one side and the overall ambience is bright and airy. The staff is tremendous fun, affording even my two sons (Damien and Beelzebub) the warmest of welcomes. The menu is not expensive but proffers an unusual choice of traditional Argentine starters, all of which were quite superb.
For main courses, the steaks offer the best option but there are alternatives for those who wish to avoid the turpitude of red meat - get a life, eh! Desserts are equally enthralling and the wine list offers a fine selection of Argentina's best, which is very good. My choice is the Navarro Correas Sauvignon Fumé 97 at £27.50 is quite pricey but truly magnificent. Absolutely wonderful and worth every penny; they even harvest the grapes at night to retain the flavour!
Overall, this restaurant (and its sister in Swallow Street Piccadilly, London W1) is very good but it is far too expensive to enjoy a higher rating: dinner will cost you £40 per person and the wine if you're sensible and listen to me, £27, £54 or, if you're really decadent, £81.
