The Fat Man

 THAI

BLUE ELEPHANT
14/6 Fulham Broadway, London SW6
Tel: 0171 385 6595
Fat Man rating: 89/100

Ever been to the rain forests of the Amazon? No. . .well, here's a great place to practise! From the outside, this glass-fronted behemoth of Blue Elephant looks relatively normal, until you enter the world of the PLANTS! Verdant is an understatement! If you have hay fever, you could be in trouble! Bridges over streams, koi carp nonchalantly swimming around in the little lakes (probably wondering when their time is up) and the densest flora outside of Kew Gardens! Dead romantic, none the less, with all of the staff dressed in traditional Thai underwear outfits.

The tables are small and a little cramped and the service friendly and erratic. Starters arrive 40 minutes after you order them then the main course is served before you've finished! The food is excellent - try the Royal Banquet at £29 - and extra hot dishes are marked with little red elephants; probably the result of jungle experimentation!

Wine list is quite expensive but who wants to drink wine with Thai? Try the local beers or the cocktails. Sunday lunch is a eat-all-you-want buffet and a great value. Overall costs are between £25 and £40 for food and booze is up to you.

Kids welcome.
