If you every wondered where every single arrogant, boorish, egotistical, sloaney, obnoxious, weasely, twatish city type of 20-something years with too much money and an accent from hell went in the evening, look no further than the bar at Avenue. Peek through the all-glass frontage and puke as you realise you need to traverse this lake of pond-life to get to the restaurant bit; the bar counter even glows a golden yellow but, alas, this is not due to radiation and the vermin probably get to annoy on another day. The overall décor is minimalist with bright objects d’art enlivening an otherwise stark interior.
The food is very, very good; overtly modern in both taste and presentation, choose from dishes such as an endive tarte tartin with mustard or filets of John Dory (just the most amazing fish - makes Turbot taste like a car tyre) with wild mushrooms. The service is average if the restaurant is not too busy but rapidly becomes dire as the evening progresses. Very friendly - just not enough of ‘em! There is even a pre-theatre menu served between 6:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. The wine list is catholic (no free choir boys with every bottle, sadly for George Michael) in its choices but is quite costly so choose carefully; a Sauvignon Blanc from New Zealand or a South African Pinot Noir represent the best value.
Expect to pay at least £40 per person for the chow and upwards of £20 for the booze.
No kids - just thousands of gits in pinstripes.
