York Races
On the southern edge of the city

York Races About a mile south of Micklegate Bar is the famous York Racecourse. It was originally built in the early 18th century around the site of the York Tyburn where the highwayman, Dick Turpin, was hanged in 1739. The actual site is marked by a paved area with seats.

The York Racecourse is now one of Britain's top racing venues, holding the Magnet Cup and Derby trials as well as fixtures throughout the Spring, Summer and Autumn. Excellent dining facilities include bars, restaurants and marquees; and there is even a museum to explore on race-days.
