Coppergate Between Pavement & King's Street
Today, Coppergate is best known for its busy modern shopping complex: the home of high street names, department stores, designer boutiques, specialist retailers, cafes and restaurants. It has dry covered walkways for winter shopping, while becoming a hanging-basket bedecked floral experience in summer.
Originally "Kopparigat" or 'street of the joiners & turners,' the area has obviously been a commercial region of the city for a very long time. This was confirmed by the excavation of numerous Viking houses and everyday objects prior to the erection of the new shops. The Jorvik Viking Centre here displays the finds and interprets Viking living.
