Parliament Street Between St. Sampson's Square & Pavement
Parliament Street is the centre of the city's main modern shopping area, running from St. Sampson's Square to Pavement. Department Stores and high street names line this wide street on both sides, while the pedestrianized tree-lined centre becomes an ideal venue for organised entertainments staged throughout the summer. A place to shop, a place stop and rest or meet friends.
Just off Parliament Street, towards the Shambles, sits the permanent Newgate Market. York's main open air trading complex since the Middle Ages, it has moved around several times and arrived on the present site in 1964. Clothing, dried goods, fruit & veg and a wonderful atmosphere: the only place to get fresh local produce and real bargains.
Next Stop: King's Square
