At Withypool, six miles northwest of Dulverton

The Royal Oak Inn, Withypool
How does one skirt the extensive? Tucked away in a cleft in the wooded valley of the Barle, this inn offers cordon bleu comfort coupled with gastronomic delights of a high order. A veritable 'tardis' of a building, layer after layer of top class amenities reveal themselves to those who venture up the rather unprepossessing stairway and into the front door. Once owned by the dual persona Maxwell Knight, spymaster inspiration for James Bond's boss 'M' and well known broadcaster on natural history, it was chosen by 'Ike' Eisenhower as a place from which to relax whilst preparing for D Day. The lounge bar is the heart of the pub and dates back three hundred years. Here a vast wood fire fills the room with heat and good cheer. Adjacent to this lie further bars and a beautifully appointed restaurant of a similar antiquity. The accommodation is fully in keeping with the ambience of the rest of the establishment. Whether you wish to pause for a noggin of ale or spend several weeks savouring the many and glorious pursuits at hand on Exmoor, The Royal Oak is an ideal place to do it.
