Lynton and Lynmouth - Somerset
Another Victorian time-piece, Lynton is perched on a rocky gorge. During the Napoleonic Wars, instead of taking the Grand Tour of Europe, many English visitors found a continental substitute here, in these delightful wooded hills and valleys at the edge of Exmoor. The town is connected to Lynmouth, far below, by the unique cliff railway, whose hydraulic system involves the use of two carriages counter-balanced by water tanks filled up at the top, and emptied at the bottom. Devastated by floods in 1952, Lynmouth has recovered the atmosphere that so delighted Gainsborough, Shelley (who honeymooned here with his 16 year old bride), and R.D. Blackmore, author of "Lorna Doone".
