Raglan, Monmouthshire

The most impressive pile of Raglan hides a complex system of formidable defences. Built in the 15th century to show the wealth of William ap Thomas, whose second wife was the daughter of David Gam (Shakespeare's model for Fluellen.) The Great Tower is a five-story hexagon of enormous strength. The present ruins show evidence of the energy and expense involved in the conversion from castle to stately residence.
