Criccieth (Krick Yeth), Caernarfonshire

Built in 1230, the castle is a native Welsh stronghold. Perched on its rocky hill above the town, it is noted for two distinct styles, its Edwardian inner ward was built inside the regular earlier Welsh outer ward. Llywelyn ap Gruffudd, the last true Prince of Wales, was imprisoned here for a time. In 1404, the castle was captured and burned by Owain Glyndwr.
