Superlatives are in order for the most mighty of the fortresses of Edward I. Built by Master James of St. George on a site that offered river, sea and rock defenses, Conwy's impressive strength conceals a beautifully preserved Great Hall and chapel. Owain Glyndwr captured the fortress when the garrison was attending Good Friday services in town. The castle and town walls, with their three double gateways and 21 towers, form an integral system of closely linked town defences.
