The last of the Welsh-built castles and the last to hold out against Edward I, Castell y Bere is situated in lonely splendour in the mountain-ringed Dysynni Valley. It was retaken by the Welsh and then destroyed; the present ruin gives no hint of its former importance as a symbol of Welsh independence.
