Tretower Castle and Court

On the road from Abergavenny to Brecon, at Tretower Court, is one of Wales' best-kept secrets, perhaps the finest existing example of a 15th century Welsh gentleman's home. The mansion, Tretower, on the grounds of the 13th century round castle keep, built by a half-brother to William of Normandy, is a delight. The spacious rooms (look for the numerous privies built into the walls) and the finely preserved timber gallery show that this was the home of a distinguished family. The only other comparable example of late medieval gentry life is to be found at Stokesay, on the borders in Shropshire.

At Tretower, the ancestral home of the illustrious Vaughans, the ancient castle ruins and well-preserved manor house come to life with the aid of an audio-cassette with music and special sound effects. One curiosity of the little village is that the ancient bridge over the Usk has 13 arches when viewed from the east, but only 12 when viewed from the west.
