Tregaron

Tregaron is situated in the Upper Teifi Valley, about three-quarters of the way from Carmarthen to Aberystwyth on the A485. A former important centre of the Welsh drovers, even issuing its own bank notes featuring a black sheep, its main claim to fame comes from its position as a leading center for pony trekking and Welsh Pony and Cob breeding. The statue in the main square is of Henry Richard, MP who founded the European Peace Union, the forerunner of the League of Nations (and the UN Organization).
Tregaron is home to the Welsh Craft Design Centre, which features gold and silver Rhiannon jewelry. Just outside town, on the road to Pontrhydfendigaid (Pont Hreed Vendig Ide) is Cors Caron Nature Reserve, which includes the largest raised bog in Wales (actually three raised peat bogs). As peat is no longer cut, the bog has a range of relatively undisturbed habitats for insects, birds, animals and plants. Access is by permit only, but there is parking available and visitors can view some of the bog from the old railway embankment that once supported the Milford Haven to Manchester Railway that opened in 1866 and closed one hundred years later. An observation tower overlooks the northern bog.
From Tregaron, one can take a mountain road to Llanwrtyd Wellls or an equally scenic road past Llyn Brianne and Twm Sion Cati's Cave to Llandovery. A few miles north of Tregaron, on the B4343 at Pontrhydfendigaid, minor roads take you to Soar Y Mynydd Chapel with a sanctuary, house and stable all under one roof, and to Strata Florida Abbey.
Next Stop: Newcastle Emlyn
