Plas Newydd, Anglesey

Plas Newydd, an 18th century mansion now in the care of the National Trust, is well worth a visit. On one wall is artist Rex Whistler's largest painting, and in the Cavalry Museum one room is devoted to memorabilia connected with the First Marquess of Anglesey who lost a leg at Waterloo, fighting alongside the Duke of Wellington. The nearby village of Brynsiencyn (Brin Shenkin) contains the Anglesey Sea Zoo, a fish farm that breeds trout, oysters and lobsters with a delightful (but expensive) aquarium displaying fish native to Anglesey's waters.

Next Stop: Beaumaris
