Llanuwchllyn

At the western end of Lake Bala, a short detour off the main Thlan Yuke A494 will take you to the little village of Llanuwchlyn (Linn), the terminus of the Bala Lake Railway. Prominent on the road side are statues of Sir Owen M. Edwards and his son Sir Ifan ab Owen Edwards, both pivotal figures in the struggle to preserve the Welsh language and culture. While the father was an educator and writer of children's books, the son founded Urdd Gobaith Cymru, (Eerth Gobithe Kumree) the Welsh League of Youth. The League has many thousands of young members, enjoying all kinds of activities practiced in the Welsh language, including an annual Eisteddfod which is second only to the National Eisteddfod in popularity.
