Llanelli (Thlan Ethlee)

All over the world the name of Llanelli is famous among rugby fans, for this is the home of the "Scarlets" who have provided so many players to the Welsh team ever since the beginning of international rugby. The team plays at Stradey Park, where the supporters sing their famous Welsh song "Sospan Bach" (little saucepan), and crown the goalposts with sauce pans, formerly one of the town's leading products.

Situated on the estuary of the River Loughor, and an important market town, Llanelli also served as a flourishing port, shipping coal and steel products to the four corners of the earth. Now most of the heavy industry has disappeared; even the immense Trostre Works, begun in 1951, the largest tinplate works in Britain lies abandoned and derelict.

In the centre of town, Parc Howard contains a museum that shows the history of the tinplate industry and houses a good collection of Llanelli pottery.
