Llanberis

Telford's road, the A55 from Chester to Holyhead, snakes its way forth from Betws y Coed to Bangor through the spectacular Pass of Nant Ffrancon. At Capel Curig, another road, the A4086 goes to Caernarfon via the equally spectacular, but much narrower Pass of Llanberis and the village of the same name.

The village has much to offer the visitor. Here, along the lakeside are located the National Museum of Wales' environmental gallery: Oriel Eryri (Oriel Err Urry) or the Museum of the North; the Welsh Slate Museum, in workshops of the former Dinorwig quarry; and the Padarn Country Park, with its network of nature and industrial trails. Rock climbers can find all the crags and overhangs they need on the towering walls of the Pass itself.

At the foot of Snowdon, a plaque erected by the National American Welsh Foundation commemorates the ancestors of Thomas Jefferson, whose home was located nearby. The narrow gauge steam railway, built to carry slate from the quarries to Port Dinorwic, now takes visitors along the shores of Llyn Padarn. Despite the awesome mountain scenery, it is hard not to notice the scarred hills, and vast slate quarries, yet these reminders of the area's industrial past are impressive enough in their own right.
