Mid-Wales: The Ancient Kingdom of Powys

This is border country, but a region of contrasts, from the very English-looking market towns of the east, to the very Welsh-looking and Welsh-speaking mountain towns of the west. It contains the world's largest second-hand book store, Wales' largest natural lake and highest waterfall; a vast region of wind swept uplands, and the sad spot that marks the death of its last ruler. It was also the home of Wales' first parliament and its first university.

Next Stop: Offa's Dyke
