Yes, the John of Gaunt title came from Ghent, where he was born. However, this title was not used after he was three years old. The only reason the name is in use now for him is because Shakespeare referred to him in this fashion in at least one of his plays. They were of course written two centuries after the time of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster. Romana.
