1994
Dionicio Ceron of Mexico produced what many people consider to be the finest run in the London Marathon's history when he defied high winds - which had forced him to scrap an attempt on the world record - to win in 2:08:53. The time was estimated to be worth at least a minute quicker in kinder conditions. Ceron clinched his victory with a stunning 14:41 split between 35 and 40 kilometres. Abebe Mekonnen of Ethiopia finished second as the first five runners broke 2:10. Eamonn Martin, the defending champion, was the top Briton in eight place in 2:11:05.

The women did not deal so well with the conditions. Katrin Dorre won for the third successive year but her 2:32:34 was the slowest winning time in London's history. Lisa Ondieki finished second again.
