Barnard Castle, Durham

Originally "Bernard's Castle" this 12th century ruin stands on a cliff above the Tees. It belonged to the powerful Balliol family, one of whom was crowned King of Scotland; and another of whom founded Balliol College, Oxford. The Round Tower contains an oriel window with the emblematic boar of Richard lll, a one-time owner.
Hours: Easter-Oct daily 10am - 6pm; Nov-Easter Wed-Sun 10am - 4pm.
