1981 It wasn't the first marathon to be held in London, but it was certainly the biggest. Sponsored by Gillette, the race had a limit of 7,000 runners but more than 20,000 applications for entries were received. Weather conditions were warm and humid, but the race was an unqualified success, won in the true spirit of the event by American Dick Beardsley and Norwegian Inge Simonsen who ran through the finish line holding hands in 2:11:48. British Olympian Trevor Wright was more than a minute behind. Joyce Smith from Great Britain won the women's race in 2:29:57 - the first itme she had gone under 2:30 - some nine minutes ahead of her nearest rival, Gillian Drake. The then little known Beronique Marot was ninth in 2:46:51. |
