Wild Edric and the Elf Maiden
Clun, Shropshire

One night Wild Edric, who fought against William the Conqueror, was lost in the Forest of Clun. Attracted by the lights of a large house, he was enchanted to find within a company of ladies, dancing. All were very tall and beautiful, but one so far excelled in beauty that Edric loved her at first sight. They married, but the maiden warned Edric never to reproach her about her sisters. Many years of happiness followed. The day came, however, when Edric, angered at being unable to find his wife, forgot her warning, and said bitterly when she at last appeared: "I suppose it is your sisters who have detained you so long." Immediately she vanished.
