Spencer Compton Earl of Wilmington 1742-43
Wilmington, as he was known, served as prime minister from January 1742 to July 1743 in an administration that was dominated by Carteret, a rival of Walpole's.
George II, after ascending to the throne had attempted to install Wilmington as a replacement for Walpole. He gave up the idea for two reasons. The Queen opposed it and Wilmington was incompetent.
