Earl of Wilmington
Wilmington, as he was known, served as prime minister from January 1742 to July 1743 in an administration that was dominated by Carteret, a rival of Walpole's.
George II, after ascending to the throne had attempted to install Wilmington as a replacement for Walpole. He gave up the idea for two reasons. The Queen opposed it and Wilmington was incompetent.
1742 - The first indoor swimming pool opened in London.
1743 - (June) George II defeated the French in the Battle of Dettingen. This was the last time a British king would lead troops into battle.
