Bentinck, 3rd Duke of Portland, became prime minister in a Charles James Fox-Frederick North coalition government which overthrew the Shelburne government. He was again prime minister from (1806-07) as a Tory during the French Revolution.




 Perspective

1783 - Jean de Rosier and the marqueis d'Arlandes make the first free-flight in a hot air balloon, 500 feet above Paris. At Tyburn, the last public hanging in Britain is performed.

Second Ministry
1806 - Britain occupies Cape Town, South Africa.
1807 - Pall Mall Street in London is illuminated by gaslight.
1808 - The Treaty of Paris officially ends the American Revolution.
1809 - Napoleon divorces Josephine to wed Marie Louise, daugther of the Hapsburg Emporer. James Madison is president of the United States.
