You could try Conway 'Welsh in America'. What time period are you looking at because reasons for immigration have changed. Main reasons in the past were economic, trying to better themselves in the new world and religious, escaping persecution from English. Hope is of help. Helen. If anyone could help me, I would greatly appreciate it. Does anyone have any reasons for why Welsh people immigrated to America? I am doing a project for school, and can't find it anywhere. web sites would also be helpful. thank you! The large migration from about 1680 into early 1700's was because of persecution by the English crown. The crown tolerated no other church than the Church of England. In addition, the King needed additional funds because of his debts and new and burdensome taxes were imposed on the Welsh. The King owed a large sum to the father of William Penn. In 1681, Penn offered to accept land in the colonies in lieu of money, so his frends, the Quakers (Religious Society of Friens) would be free to practice their own faith and establish their own communities and speak their own language. could practice their religion. The King was only too happy to be rid of that debt and perhaps some of the Welsh. Entire Welsh communities purchased land from Penn in what is now Pennsylvania. The migration at that time included Quakers from England and Germany as well. After they were settled, they told others in Wales and elsewhere about the opportunities in America and they continued to arrive, spreading through the mid-west and the south.
