It does seem ridiculous to me, since "Preis" in German simply means what "price" means in English, which is simply the cost of something, and wouldn't make much sense as a surname one way or another. I still can't figure out how on earth a pack of Pennsylvania Dutch (German-Americans from around the 18th century), who are supposed to be the takers-on of the surname, ended up with it. It sounds like one of those myths passed down by people who don't have the whole story straight. I still can't get anyone to explain to me exactly what happened, but there are some who swear that it did happen.
