Scarborough Castle, Yorkshire
On a jutting, craggy wooded headland used by settlers in the Bronze Age, Iron Age, Roman and Viking periods, the remains of the vast Norman castle mainly consist of a three-story keep, 13th century barbicon and walls that trace the cliff edge. Starved into surrender in the Civil Wars, it was heavily bombarded by the German navy in WWl.
