Richmond Castle, Yorkshire
Still impressive are the massive 100ft high keep and the curtain wall of this 11th century fort. In the Gold Hole Tower, look for the medieval latrines. The castle escaped the Wars of the Roses and the Civil Wars. Its Great Hall is the oldest Norman hall in Britain.
Hours: 15 Mar-15 Oct daily 9:30am - 6:30pm; 16 Oct-14 Mar 9:30am - 4pm. Closed Maundy Thur, Good Fri, 24-26 Dec and 1 Jan.
