Norham Castle, Northumberland Standing out on its rocky outcrop in flat farm country, the pink sandstone walls and square keep were once a much-fought over border stronghold built by the Bishop of Durham in 1160. Some restoration took place in 1900.
Hours: Easter-Oct daily 10am - 6pm.
