Middleham Castle, North Yorkshire
Once known as "the Windsor of the North" it used to be owned by the great Neville family. The vast castle now in ruins, was acquired by Richard lll in 1471. The 13th century chapel and the l4th century gatehouse survive.
Hours: Apr-Oct daily 10am - 6pm; Nov-Easter Wed-Sun 10am - 4pm.
