Helmsley Castle, North Yorkshire
Only gaunt ruins remain of the 12th to 13th century castle, with its unique D-shaped keep. After its surrender to General Fairfax in the Civil Wars, much of its stonework found its way into local houses. Ironically, Fairfax's daughter married the Castle's owner, the Duke of Buckingham.
Hours:15 Mar-15 Oct daily 9:30am - 6:30pm; 16 Oct-14 Mar 9:30am - 4pm. Closed Maundy Thur, Good Friday, 24-26 Dec and 1 Jan.
