Bamburgh Castle, Northumberland Standing on a basalt crag high above the North Sea, the castle was once the seat of the Kings of Northumbria. The Norman border fortress was extensively modified by Henry ll and Henry lll. In the Civil Wars it was the very first castle to fall by gunfire. In 1894 it was completely rebuilt to house apartments. On display is a collection of weapons, tapestries and paintings.
