Aydon, Northumberland
Aydon is an excellent example of a fortified manor house, one of many erected in the lawless valleys of Northumberland. It dates from 1296 when an unfortunate Suffolk merchant purchased the property and erected the main house. Scottish raids forced him to turn his manor into a castle from 1305 onwards, but this didn't prevent his kidnap ten years later!
Hours: Entrance Fee. Closed in Winter.
