St. Milgitha
(Died c.AD 750)
Abbess of Minster-in-Thanet
Died: 17th January c.AD 750 at Minster-in-Thanet, Kent
St. Milgitha was the daughter of King Merewald of Magonset and his wife, St. Ermenburga (alias Aebbe of Minster-in-Thanet); and younger sister of SS. Milburga and Mildred. Some say she was a nun in Northumbria, but the more popular story has her entering the monastery at Eastry, near Canterbury, in Kent. She eventually succeeded her sister, Mildred, as Abbess of Minster-in-Thanet in AD 732, where she later died and was buried. During her nunnery's destruction by the Danes, the relics of both her and her sister were apparently whisked away to safety at Lyming and, in 1085, were presented by Archbishop Lanfranc to the Religious Hospital of St. Gregory in Canterbury. Little else seems to be known about her.
