The Piltdown Man The name given a skull and jawbone found in a gravel pit in Piltdown in Sussex in and about 1910. Experts at the time dated the find at about 250,000 old. Thought to be the "missing link" between apes and humans, the skull was later dated by radiocarbon tests in the 1950s at around 1230 A.D. and the jaw was identified as that of a modern ape.
