Sir Alfred Joseph Hitchcock (1899-1980)
Filmmaker, born in East London, Hitchcock is the acknowledged master of suspense. He began his career as a junior film technician in 1920, and progressed up the ladder to film director in 1925. He is noted for making cameo appearances in his films and has directed such classics as "The Thirty-Nine Steps" (1935), "Rebecca" (1940), "Dial M For Murder" (1954), "Rear Window" (1955), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963) and "Frenzy" (1972).
