St. Frithestan
(died 932)

Born: c.870
Bishop of Winchester
Died: 10th September 932

Very little is known of Frithestan. He succeeded Denewulf as Bishop of Winchester in AD 909, at which time the diocese was much reduced by the creation of the See of Ramsbury & Sonning under Bishop Aethelstan. William of Malmesbury tells us that he was amongst seven bishops consecrated by Archbishop Plegmund of Canterbury on the same day. Some of Frithestan's books survived in William's day and he records that, though the site of the Bishop's tomb was unknown, this fact could not hide his holiness. He was reverred as a saint from at least the 13th century, though he was little known outside Winchester. He retired in favour of St. Birstan in May 931, dying a year later. His feast day is 10th September.
