Princess Riemmelth of North Rheged
(born c.600)
(Welsh-Rhiainfelt, Latin-Reginbelta, English-Regina)
Rhiainfelt was the grandaughter of Prince Rhun. She married, as his first
wife, Prince (later King) Oswy of Northumbria around 638 and
thus became mother of King Alcfrith. Sadly, she appears to have
died within a few years of their marriage. It has been suggested
that this was a political alliance designed to pass the run-down
Kingdom of Rheged into the more stable hands of Saxon
Northumbria. There is little evidence to back up this theory, but
the idea is appealing. Was Rhiainfelt's father, Rhoedd, really the
last King of an independant Rheged?
