Gerren, King of Dumnonia
(born c.670)
(Welsh-Gereint, Latin-Gerontius, English-Gereint)
Probably the son of King Dungarth ap Culmin. He received a letter from St. Aldhelm at the Synod of Whitby in 700/5 insisting that the Celtic Church of Dumnonia comply with the doctrines of Rome. In 710 his armies clashed with King Ine of Wessex who managed to establish a fortress at Taunton, west of the Parrett. Twelve years later though, when Ine thought to overtake Dumnonia completely, his armies were crushed and had to withdraw with tails between their legs.
