Elidyr Llydanwyn, King of South Rheged
(born c.462)
(Welsh-Elidyr, Latin-Elidurus, English-Elider)
The first King of Rheged's southern region inherited from his father, Meichion Gul, in the mid-530s. It covered modern
Lancashire and Cheshire, and was probably centred on Ribchester or
Lancaster. Rheged-dale or modern Rochdale still retains the name
of his Kingdom. Little is known about him, unlike his
contemporary and namesake with whom he is often confused, the
Strathclyde Prince, Elidyr Mwynfawr (the Wealthy). The King of
South Rheged was Stout and Handsome - an interesting
combination.
